Sports Day - July 2024
This year, St Mary’s Sports Day took place on Thursday 11th July, one week later than we had originally planned (thank you British Summer weather!). The Key Stage 1 event took place in the morning, with the Key Stage 2 event taking place in the afternoon and we were joined by lots of parents, carers and friends of the school; in between we enjoyed our annual picnic lunch on the meadow. Both events started off with a flag procession, with the Year 6 captains carrying along our newly won District Sports trophy and then an impressively choreographed dance led by the KS2 Athletics team with everyone joining in. It was a really fun way of starting off this annual sporting event.
Representing their four Houses (Air, Earth, Fire & Water) the KS1 and KS2 events included a wide range of sporting activities, including the space hopper race, egg & spoon race, 3-legged race, skipping race, sack race, sprint race and the relay race, with the children enjoying well-deserved rests in between and (of course!) cheering their Houses on. Needless to say our pupils were extremely busy throughout the morning and afternoon. Points were awarded to children who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each race, with all pupils given stickers for participation. Every few races the children were given a score update on the loudspeaker with Miss Hunter and some Year 6 pupils keeping everyone updated by recording the points on the large whiteboard.
At the end, certificates were presented to pupils for showing a range of our six school values of Compassion, Friendship, Perseverance, Respect, Trust and Truthfulness (for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2). Throughout Sports Day members of the School Fundraising Team raised money for the school by selling delicious Sausage Sizzlers, hot and cold drinks and tasty cakes! Furthermore, pre-loved uniform and bespoke programmes were sold and all monies added to our fundraising pot. The PTA also kindly donated ice-lollies for every single pupil; these were awarded as a special treat at the very end of the day. I am delighted to report that the school and PTA raised £894 from the special raffle, £65.50 from programme sales, £172.50 from online sales of Sausage Sizzlers, £391.55 from Sausage Sizzlers and teas/coffees/refreshments on the day and £27.10 for preloved uniform sales, giving the school a grand total of £1,550.65 raised throughout this event. Amazing work everyone and thank you for your generosity.
